Recently opened, Windsor Unified School District’s new preschool, Margie Mejia Preschool, is made possible thanks to a generous gift from our neighbors, the Lytton Rancheria of California. The new preschool is adjacent to the main Mattie Washburn campus, but provides a private space for our littlest learners to thrive and grow. The new facility features five brand new, state-of-the-art classrooms, an admin building, a parent drop-off and socialization area for easier transitions, an outdoor classroom and nature space, a formal play area with play structures, covered lunch and conference areas, all under the hertiage oak trees endemic to the area.

Margie Mejia Preschool is located adjacent to the Mattie Washburn Elementary Campus at 75 Pleasant Avenue. However, the parking lot and dedicated entrance is located off of Sugar Maple Drive near the baseball field. To access the campus: from Old Redwood Highway turn on to Shadetree Drive, and then take a right on to Sugar Maple, and you will see the campus and parking lot on your right-hand side. Windsor Unified School District Celebrates the Opening of Its New Margie Mejia Preschool
PRESS RELEASE
Windsor, Calif.—On March 9, 2026 local politicians and dignitaries joined Windsor Unified School District’s Superintendent Jeremy Decker and Lytton Rancheria of California Chairperson Andy Mejia in cutting the ribbon on WUSD’s brand new state-of-the-art preschool.
Margie Mejia Preschool at Mattie Washburn Elementary is open to students ages 2-5 and is named in honor of Mejia’s mother, who passed away in 2022 after serving for 27 years as the Tribal Chairperson.
Mejia was joined by some of WUSD’s littlest learners to cut the ribbon on their new facility, and then all in attendance were able to tour the new facility, which features five classrooms, each with their own bathroom, and extensive outdoor play area, as well as an outdoor classroom, nature and garden space under the heritage oak trees. There is also a new admin building, and a gathering space for parents to enjoy during drop-off and pick-up.
Rounding out the atmosphere at the new facility is the historic bell of Windsor, which once graced the front of Windsor Creek Elementary School. The bell has been cleaned and restored and is now installed in front of the new preschool, connecting the past and future of education in Windsor.
Construction of the preschool was made possible by a gift from the Lytton Rancheria of California, which allowed the District to complete the build debt-free.
Superintendent Decker said that the District had initially approached the tribe for a loan to complete construction, but Mejia had called him to tell him they would be gifting the money instead. “I’m not going to lie, I probably freaked Chairperson Mejia out a little bit when I started crying on the phone,” Decker said.
Chairperson Mejia shared that the facility bearing his mother’s name was an ideal way to recognize her commitment to her Tribe, her community, and to children. “My mother, Margie Mejia, was a champion of education and believed deeply that every child should have access to the foundation that quality early learning provides. Naming this preschool in her honor ensures that her legacy of service and commitment to young people will live on for generations.”
“She worked tirelessly to maintain strong, cooperative relationships with local, state and federal governments,” he said, adding that this type of project would have fit in well with her vision of cooperation.
“This is a genuine gift to the families of Windsor,” said Jessica Borland, WUSD’s Director of Early Ed and Expanded Learning. “It’s going to provide that all important foundation for a lifetime of learning. We are so grateful to the Tribe for their support and assistance.”
Margie Mejia Preschool at Mattie Washburn is a play-based preschool, offering full and half-day programs for students ages 2-5. Some families are eligible to attend for free, based on income, and other families are subject to a sliding fee scale, based on income.
